Nothinge is an unidentified object within performance. It started 2013 when I was playing around with materials on cassette recorders, reel to reel, voice recorders. Fascinated by the compression of lo-fidelity, that made think that 'there is a lot I can hear despite the extreme amount of compression within tape' . It allowed me feel there were audible psychic spaces between objects within the medium of lo-fidelity and other forms of compression with sound.
I understand my art form to be a ghost of itself, living in the present. As in haunting the self with the presence of its own being. I don't see this being a new margin of artistry, but looking back into history and reinventing sound through older processes. Upholding many great artists of the past in their essence to create something new, because anything new is obviously informed by the past. We now live in an age where modernity, at least within the scope of electronic music has become something of the past. Futurism has slowly become formalised itself into pop cultural aesthetics, and the new generations only listen to themselves because the future has mutated into the present. This idea that I am referring to is 'Hauntology'.
Nothinge's work involves processes of finding sound materials and ideas present in older recordings from the 21st century dating back to instrumentation used in 16th, 17th, 18th century european music, though it still finds necessary to formulate these concepts into the popular canon of contemporary music / electronic music for new audiences. Specifically audiences who love musical forms used across academia (such as classical, experimental works) into localized communities (which could be said as Rock n Roll, New Wave, or Pop Music).
I have prospects to create an album within the contemporary sphere, which is aware of the concomitant nature technology and networks, it gives tribute and reference to artists, dancers and musicians which I uphold as important points in history. It is an album that creates a parallel universe inside history about characters who never existed and reflecting on imaginative tales of a fake past.
I am currently studying under Warren Burt at Box Hill Institute, he is a composer/musicologist/electro-acoustic/microtonal artist who has helped me exponentially to find exactly what I appreciate within sound, and he is partially the reason why I continue to strive to create the best work within this landscape. I also am an integral part of Montreal Community music scene, where I have performed with some great artists like Bernardino Femminielli (Part of Lost Lizard/Dirty Beaches), CO/NTRY (Duo from Montreal) , Tobias Rochman (Pelada), Matthew E. Duffy (Performed with Grimes).
